Beyond the Record
Music news, album reviews & interviews
Castle Pines is an indie rock group from Corona, CA and has seemingly had a slow crawl to the top, which is all too common among the indie scene. It showcases the current state of the music industry, with great bands like these folks not able to get the recognition as quickly as I would most certainly hope to see. Though there are great bands that have taken years to get where they are today, and just one of those bands would be The National. Castle Pines is part of the "larger than life" sound that brings forth vast emotions and layers of ambiance and would dare to put them in the same limelight as The National. Though that could be the guitar swells and layering of melodic phrases and melodies, this band defines their genre incredibly well and stands with the giants who have come before them.
Castle Pines is known for their reliable track record. Literally. Bless This House, released in 2014, is stellar. Summer Blood, however, unveils a more mature sound from the group, taking on new forms of life within the realm of which it already exists. It's an expansion. A notable feature here on this record, is the bravery presented to be different and sound different all together. They clearly have taken a new direction, keeping inspiration from other artists, but are discovering exactly who or what Castle Pines is really all about. This takes on a form of more post rock on tracks like Plastic Sky with the instrumentation being geared towards that genre, with the lyrics and vocal passages being in the likes of pop rock.
